On the Way to a Little Way 1985-86

First exhibited 5th International Triennale of Tapestry, Central Museum of Textiles, Lodz, Poland in 1985.

In mid 1984 I started a residency at WAIT, now Curtain University in Perth, Western Australia. I was given an empty room as a studio, where I worked on a series of drawings and relief pieces, for about 6 months. After a few weeks I noticed that there were several picture hooks on the wall, I thought well I’ve got some art I’ll hang it up. Tying cord to some of the 3D mesh pieces, I hung them on from the hooks and started to watch them swing gently from side to side. Looking at the sections on the wall in Perth I realized that I could make a work that could be assembled in suspended sections. The wall became increasingly important, some surfaces where good, others a distraction. So, the idea of a wall drawing began to develop, a major plus point was the ease by which larger works could collapse and travel.

There’s a certain synchronicity at play here, On the Way to a Little Way is a continuation of a series of ideas begun in Australia in 1984, the work was made in my studio in England and subsequently shipped to Brisbane in Australia, after an initial showing in Poland.
